The DeLorean DMC-12 is a sports car produced in Northern Ireland for the American automobile company DeLorean Motor Company from 1981 to 1983. In 2009, the cars were made to order and rebuilt by DMC Texas. [1]
The more common name was DeLorean, as it was the only model produced by the company. The DMC-12 used gull wing doors. The first DeLorean Safety Vehicle (DSV) prototype appeared in March 1977, and production began in 1981 (the first DMC-12 rolled off the assembly line on January 21 at DMC's Dunmurry factory in Northern Ireland). During its production, several parts of the car were included (hood, wheels and interior). Before production ceased in 1983, about nine thousand copies of the DMC-12 were produced.
A distinctive feature of the car was a composite frame body, pasted over from the outside with sheets of unpainted stainless steel 1 mm thick, which is why DeLorean turned out to be resistant to corrosion and acquired a specific shade of the body. The car was creatively designed as a time machine in Robert Zemeckis' film trilogy Back to the Future.
DMC-12s were primarily aimed at the American market, so the cars are equipped with left-hand drive at the factory. Only a few RHD DeLoreans have been released for use in the UK.
